Most of us are familiar with yoga as a physical practice of movement, breath, and specific poses. However, yoga is more traditionally known as a eightfold or 8-limbed path, made up of 7 other foundational aspects other than just the physical practice.
The first of these two limbs are the Yamas and the Niyamas. These limbs are yoga's ethical guidelines that are laid out to help practitioners to live a more skillful and authentic life. The Yamas are principles that outline how we should ethically interact with the world, and the Niyamas describe how we should care for ourselves.
These principles are meant to empower us to open up to the journey of joy and love. When we commit to our practice not just as pretty postures in class, but also in real-time, ethical practices in every moment, we will find true happiness, a clear conscious, and the ability to manifest what we need when we need it.
Class will begin with an explanation and interpretation of the weekly Yama or Niyama, followed by a short guided meditation. After that we will work into a Vinyasa/Yin practice, designed to reflect lessons aligned with the topic of discussion. We'll end with some longer-held Yin poses and a nice, long savasana.
You can use your punch card to sign up for all classes of the series or drop in to class at any time. Below you will find the scheduled list of topics for this class. You can sign up for class through our free Fairbanks Yoga app or by clicking the title of the class below.

The word “Ayurveda” is derived from Sanskrit and means “science of life.” In Ayurveda, there’s an underlying belief that everything in life is connected. Because of this, general health and wellness rely on achieving balance and harmony. When a person is imbalanced or stressed, they are likely to develop disease. Ayurveda focuses on implementing lifestyle interventions and natural treatments, therapies, and remedies to provide balance among your physical body, mind, spirit and the world around you. In this workshop, we'll explore different constitutions, diet (tastes), sleep cycles, routines, an purification practices that help create a life that is harmonious with the world around us.

Yoga Nidra (or Yogic Sleep) is a unique state of consciousness where you experience both alert awareness and deep relaxation. It is a powerful tool for stress relief, anxiety reduction, healing, and transformation that is both a simple and profound practice, open to all.
Class begins by allowing students to come into a comfortable, supported, resting posture (lying down or seated). Then using a combination of physical relaxation techniques, breath practices, and guided meditation, we create an internal environment that invites us to experience progressive relaxation and release of tension.
Physiologically, Yoga Nidra takes the practitioner into alpha and theta brain wave activity. When we tap into this level of consciousness, we disengage from our image of self and allow the brain to rewire, releasing what no longer supports us
After practice, students can often feel lighter, rested, and at peace. With a consistent practice, you may experience improved memory, increased creativity, decreased anxiety, maintained energy throughout the day, better sleep, and a deeper connection between body, mind and spirit.

Physiologically, Yoga Nidra takes the practitioner into alpha and theta brain wave activity. These brain wave states have been scientifically shown to accelerate learning and healing. When we tap into this level of consciousness, we disengage from our image of self, our fears, worries, and expectations. Here, shifts occur in our limiting habit-patterns (which often drive our behavior and underlie our emotions), and we rewire, rewrite, and release what no longer supports us. Balance is restored to our nervous system, and the mind quiets, becoming receptive to insight and clarity.
After practice, students often feel lighter, rested, relaxed, blissed-out, and at peace. With a consistent practice, you may experience improved memory, increased creativity, decreased anxiety, maintained energy throughout the day, better sleep, and a deeper connection between body, mind, heart, spirit.
You can use your punch card or $16 studio drop in / $8 virtual drop in.

What will happen in each session?
Each session will begin with a short introduction and instruction on how to set up props to best support you in the practice. We now have the full range of props available for use in studio. If you attend online, you can use blankets, bath towels, pillows, couch cushions, and stacks of books. You can also practice prop-free or modify the proposed set-up for individual needs.
This will be followed by a 45-60 minute fully-guided Nidra practice. Each session will have a particular focus and an intention that supports that focus and acts as a through-line for the session. Please read the section below if you would like to learn more about each week’s focus.
Cost is $60 to register for the entire series
This class is available both online and in-person.
There are 12 spots available in-studio.
Recordings are available to those who miss class.
A link to the live Zoom meeting will be sent out 30 minutes prior to class.
April 7: Physical Body
This session will center on cultivating awareness of physical sensations in the body and creating space for the release of tension and pain. It will also introduce participants to the overall sequence of techniques and process of Yoga Nidra, thereby allowing for a deeper or broader experience in the following sessions.
April 14: Mind & Emotions
This session will center on cultivating awareness of the thinking mind and observing its impulse to label or judge everything it encounters, placing it on one side or the other of a perceived (though ultimately false) duality, such as good or bad, easy or difficult, pleasant or painful. We will practice allowing things to simply be as they are, separate from our judgements about them and reactions to them, and we will feel the deep peace (or become more familiar with or comfortable with that peace) that comes with this experience.
April 21: Chakras
This session will center on cultivating awareness of energy in the 7 of the major chakras, or energy centers, of the body. Chakra translates to “wheel,” and we can think of these spaces as hubs for all the energy flowing along various pathways of the body. We will spend time at each chakra, experiencing the energy there, and exploring the statement of action that each one governs.
April 28: Koshas
This session will center on the 5 koshas, or sheaths or layers, of the human being: the physical body, the vital body, the mental and emotional body, the wisdom or intuitive body, and the state of bliss. We will cultivate awareness of each layer and spend some time there, experiencing ourselves as multi-layered beings. This session will also bring closure to the series and offer resources for those who would like to continue exploring a Nidra practice.

What is Yoga Nidra? How do we practice?
Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep) is a unique state of alert awareness and deep relaxation. It is a powerful tool for stress relief, anxiety reduction, healing, transformation. Unresolved past experiences, stress, and tension can stagnate or block the flow of energy. Blockages often manifest in our daily lives as tension in body, restlessness in mind, fear in heart. YN restores the free-flow of energy through our bodymind.
We practice in a comfortable, supported, resting posture (lying down or seated). Using a combination of physical relaxation techniques, breath practices, sound vibrations, as well as guided meditation, visualization, and affirmation, we create an internal environment that invites us to experience progressive relaxation and release of tension. Balance is restored to our nervous system. The mind quiets, receives insights and clarity. Renewal occurs.
YN takes us into alpha and theta brain wave activity, which has been scientifically documented as conducive to accelerated learning, healing, and stress relief. These states help us disengage from our image of self, our fears, worries, and expectations, allowing space for shifts to occur in our limiting habit-patterns of thought and belief (which often drive our behavior and underlie our emotions). We rewire our brain, rewrite our stories, and release what no longer supports us. And in so doing, we allow space for that which does support us to seed and bloom.
After practice, folks often feel lighter, rested, relaxed, blissed-out, at peace. A consistent practice may bring improved memory, increased creativity, more ease with decision-making, decreased anxiety, maintained energy throughout the day, better sleep, and a deeper connection between body, mind, heart, spirit, along with increased freedom in daily life.

Participants will be guided back from the main session slowly, allowing time for transition and reflection. The session will close with a few minutes allotted for questions and (optional) sharing of one’s experience.
How is this series structured?
January 6: Physical Body
This session will center on cultivating awareness of physical sensations in the body and creating space for the release of tension and pain. It will also introduce participants to the overall sequence of techniques and process of Yoga Nidra, thereby allowing for a deeper or broader experience in the following sessions.
January 13: Mind & Emotions
This session will center on cultivating awareness of the thinking mind and observing its impulse to label or judge everything it encounters, placing it on one side or the other of a perceived (though ultimately false) duality, such as good or bad, easy or difficult, pleasant or painful. Conditioned mind, then, urges us to react by either desiring/wanting/pulling the thing towards us or by avoiding/eschewing/pushing the thing away from us. We will practice allowing things to simply be as they are, separate from our judgements about them and reactions to them, and we will feel the deep peace (or become more familiar with or comfortable with that peace) that comes with this experience.
January 20: Chakras
This session will center on cultivating awareness of energy in the bodymind and on 7 of the major chakras, or energy centers, of the body. Chakra translates to “wheel,” and we can think of these spaces as hubs for all the energy flowing along various pathways of the body—kind of like traffic roundabouts for cars. When they are working properly, the traffic (our energy) flows easily and smoothly. When they are not working properly (or the intersection has a traffic light instead), the traffic moves in fits and starts, experiences delays or blockages, and cannot easily and efficiently move where and when it needs to. This is not a perfect metaphor, but you get the idea. We will spend time at each chakra, experiencing the energy there, and exploring the statement of action that each one governs.
January 27: Koshas
This session will center on the 5 koshas, or sheaths or layers, of the human being: the physical body, the vital body, the mental and emotional body, the wisdom or intuitive body, and the state of bliss. We will cultivate awareness of each layer and spend some time there, experiencing ourselves as multi-layered beings. We will move towards experiencing wholeness and integration as we align our outer layers with the bliss body that is our innermost core. This session will also bring closure to the series and offer resources for those who would like to continue exploring a Nidra practice.

What is Meditation?
Meditation is the practice of whole-hearted, non-judgmental presence with moment. The ultimate goal is to cultivate happiness that is not dependent on any external cause or circumstance. Doing this requires the stilling of both the mind and the body to allow a direct connection to the present moment. Developing a meditation practice can feel overwhelming, so in this series, we have created a practical approach to help you start your meditation journey.
Class is broken down into two parts: Practice and Lecture. In each class, we will practice guided silent seated meditation (working from 5 minutes to roughly 20 minutes by the last week), as well as explore various philosophical concepts from Eastern world views. With this foundation, we will discuss and apply these concepts to modern life so that you can regularly use these techniques.

What is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial release is a technique that uses sustained pressure to break up connective tissue binds in the body. These binds can limit muscle mobility and cause both pain and tension. Fascia is a densely woven connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones, and all of our internal organs. We build new layers of fascia every day, so if we do not take the initiative to break up these binds, our bodies become tighter and more stuck in our habitual movement patterns. The resulting outcome is tension, knots, pain, and lack of mobility.
What is Vinyasa Yoga?
Vinyasa (“flow”) yoga is a dynamic style of yoga that combines cued breath and specific movement to provide a practice that helps to keep you engaged and aware. Often, this style of yoga guides you through different movements per breath and/or provides you longer-held postures to breathe deeply in.
Each week, we will begin class with a brief overview of the locations and names of the targeted muscle groups. From there we transition into myofascial floor work to help loosen the binds in our fascia and prepare the body for the oncoming movement practice. (Questions on prop placement are welcome). Next, we transition to standing and eventually into an all-levels vinyasa section of class, where students will move through a guided flow, sometimes with pauses to add in extra myofascial exercises, but mostly to continue the path of opening up the targeted area of the body. We will end class with additional myofascial release techniques and a take a final rest in savasana for a well-rounded class to help integrate your work and prepare you to move forward into your day with a clear mind and awakened body.
Jacie Sturm will be leading this series and has been working with different facets of myofascial release for years. Her passion for wellness extends far beyond traditional vinyasa movement, so she is excited to be offering this multi-faceted class to the Fairbanks community.
We utilize several different props in this class, including Yoga Body rubber balls, peanut lacrosse balls, sand bags, cork blocks, blankets, and bolsters. Having a dedicated class to this work means that Jacie will have time to help assist you in these shapes to make sure you are getting the most out of your class and that you are using the props correctly and effectively.

Low grade, persistent tension, stress and anxiety not only tightens our muscles, it tightens the layers within and in-between muscles: the fascia. We have no conscious control over the fascial network, and so, the physical patterning of the body becomes a reflection of the patterning of the mind and emotions. We need to consciously unbind this tightness to aid in processing stored emotions and regaining muscle mobility.
In this workshop, we will utilize safe and effective techniques using tennis balls and sustained pressure to loosen fascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion in the muscles. The goal is to provide you with the knowledge you need to incorporate these deep-tissue releases into your daily wellness routine.
Cost is $20

Do you struggle with setting and/or maintaining boundaries?
Do feelings of guilt accompany boundary setting?
Do you find yourself absorbing the feelings of others, or armoring up in order to avoid feelings?
Do you have trouble saying "no”?
Do you say “yes” only to regret it later, so you end up with a resentful yes?
Do you struggle to ask for what you want or need?
Do you struggle with saying what you mean, meaning what you say, and not saying it in a mean way?
Do you self-identify as an empath or a HSP (highly sensitive person)?
In this series of workshops, we will explore values-based living as a foundation for forward momentum in regards to establishing boundaries. This will be followed by conversations around shame, people-pleasing, and drama as barriers to enacting healthy boundaries. Learning to regulate the nervous system is the key to staying connected to our internal experience while balancing the needs of others. When the nervous system is feeling stretched, frayed or under stress, we are increasingly likely to fawn and shrink, or puff up and dominate. We will practice mindful noticing of internal experiences through a series of curious experiments, and complete the series with body hacks to calm the nervous system.

After that we will work into an all-levels Vinyasa (flow) practice, designed to reflect lessons aligned with the topic of discussion. We'll end with some longer-held Yin poses and a nice, long savasana.

Want to know more about the instructor?
Jacie took her very first yoga class here in Fairbanks, roughly 15 years ago when she was a teenager. With no athletic background, yoga did not come naturally at all to her, but something in that first class kept her coming back. With practice and patience, Jacie quickly fell in love with yoga and all the benefits she experienced. While attending college in California, she completed her 200-Hour Teacher Training and became a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) in 2011. Since then, she’s taught thousands of hours of classes always with the intention of making yoga approachable, accessible, and interesting. She’s developed a teaching style is clear, organized, and creative that allows students to feel safe and supported while they explore their practice. She believes that there is magic in this practice and is passionate about introducing others to yoga so that they may feel that same magic that got her hooked all those years ago.

Yoga Nidra (or Yogic Sleep) is a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping. You will be guided into a comfortable resting posture that you may choose to maintain for the duration of the class. Once the body begins to settle, the instructor's verbal guidance provides a mental journey, allowing you to drop-in to your body and slow down the nervous system. It is not uncommon for students to "disappear" for sections of (or the majority of) this practice as you go deeper into your consciousness. Yoga Nidra is scientifically proven to help reduce stress and in turn, creates a space where both physical and emotional healing can occur.
Expect to leave this practice feeing light, rested, blissful, and relaxed. With a regular practice of yoga Nidra, you will begin to reap the benefits of better memory, increased creativity, maintained energy through the day, better sleep, and a deeper connection between body and mind.

Join us in this dual-instructor sound bath meditation to help reduce tension, ease the body, and calm the mind. We begin practice with a short, guided heart meditation and then slip into a word-free musical meditation, surrounded by the sounds of singing bowls, gongs, chimes, and other various transcendental instruments. As you lie down or sit, you will hear and feel the vibrations travel through your liquid body, helping to move blocked energy. Individual sound baths will also be provided as instructors, Pam and Paula travel around the room.
Sound baths can help you to simply relax, or they can take you on a journey that allows you to find answers and healing. We encourage you to let go, release whatever is limiting you, and receive physical, mental, emotional and spiritual clearing and balance through this vibrational massage.
Please come wearing comfortable clothes and bring any other props you may need for a seated hour of meditation. We have bolsters and blankets at the studio but you are welcome to bring your own pillow, blanket, meditation cushion, chair, etc.
Pam is a Craniosacral Therapist, Energy Worker and Gong Practitioner. She is a Certified Teacher of ‘Awakening The Illuminated Heart’ workshop for the School of Remembering.
Paula is a HealingTouch practitioner, energy worker, nurse and sound healer.
Cost is $25
You can register by signing up below or through our free Fairbanks Yoga app. Payment is required upon registration.

"Sleep is the golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.” Thomas Dekker
Life’s demands often mean that we sacrifice sleep, despite the fact that sleep is vital to our physical and mental well-being. Lack of adequate sleep impairs our higher levels of reasoning, problem-solving and attention to detail, which then cascades into impaired function at work, school, in our communication and in our relationships, resulting in increased stress levels which then impacts upon…..our ability to sleep!
In this monthly workshop, we will interweave the ancient wisdom and modern science of sound vibration, pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation (letting go of the thinking mind), and asana (yoga poses), to release tension in the head, feet, pelvic diaphragm and thoracic diaphragm, and to restore the nervous system, thus paving the way for sleep.
Space is limited to 18 students so sign up ahead of time to reserve your spot in class. Please also bring a yoga mat (we have extras at the studio if you forget yours) and bring (or wear) a fresh pair of socks as we will be working with the feet to release tension.
